Predictive Logistics AI
Custom reinforcement learning models that turned supply chain routing into a self-optimizing system.
A national logistics provider was routing thousands of daily shipments using static rules built years earlier. Synaptic Technologies was engaged to replace that fixed logic with a reinforcement learning system that could adapt routing decisions in real time.
The Challenge
The client's existing routing engine relied on fixed heuristics: shortest distance, then fewest stops, then lowest fixed fuel-cost estimate. It couldn't account for real-time variables like traffic, weather, fuel price fluctuations, or driver availability, so dispatchers were manually overriding routes dozens of times a day, and even then, fuel costs kept climbing faster than volume did.
Any new system had to run inside existing dispatch software the client's team already relied on, and it had to make decisions fast enough to matter, in seconds, not minutes.
The Approach
Synaptic's team built a custom reinforcement learning model trained on two years of the client's historical routing and fuel-cost data, alongside live feeds for traffic and weather. The model learns to trade off delivery time against fuel cost dynamically, rather than following a fixed priority order, and continues learning from outcomes as new routing decisions play out.
Rather than replacing the client's dispatch software, the model was deployed as a recommendation layer that surfaces optimized routes directly inside the existing dispatcher interface, so drivers and dispatchers didn't need to learn a new system.
- Model trained and validated against two years of historical routing data before any live deployment.
- Phased rollout starting with a single regional hub before expanding nationally.
- Continuous retraining pipeline that incorporates outcomes from completed routes every week.
The Results
"Our dispatchers stopped fighting the routing engine and started trusting it. That shift alone changed how our whole operations floor runs day to day."
Logistics Client, Director of Operations
The routing model now handles the majority of daily dispatch decisions nationwide, with dispatchers stepping in only for genuine edge cases, and continues to improve as it learns from new outcomes each week.
